Course Overview

This course provides training for officers and ratings, it comprises a basic training programme appropriate to their duties, including oil and chemical tanker safety, fire safety practice and obligations under applicable laws and regulations. The course takes full account of Section A-V/1-1 of the STCW Code adopted by the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers as amended, including the Manila amendments 2010.

Competence:

At the end of the training, attendees should be able to:

  1. Understand the equipment, instrumentation and controls used for cargo handling on a tanker.
  2. Understand the need  for proper planning, the use of checklists, and the time scale involved in various operations onboard an oil or chemical tanker
  3. Promote safety and protect the marine environment
  4. Know the importance in the application of proper and safe procedures at all times when carrying out the various operations on board an oil or chemical tanker
  5. Understand the principles of confined space entry
  6. Know loading and unloading procedures
  7. Know the flashpoint of product in cargo
  8. Understand simple tank cleaning procedures

Learning Outcome:

Participants upon successful completion of this course should achieve the required standard of competence enabling them to contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness and the ability to recognize security threats and to respond appropriately. This knowledge shall include, but is not limited to:

  1. The meaning and the consequential requirements of the different security levels;
  2. Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans;
  3. Recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices;
  4. Recognition, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security; and
  5. Techniques used to circumvent security measures.
